Baby Skin Care

Like many moms, I find nothing more irresistible than squishilicious baby cheeks!    A baby's skin is so pure, fresh and soft -- cheek-to-cheek snuggles are a daily must-have for me.   (And, in spite of my old(er), dry, lived-in skin, my baby girl enjoys the daily snugs too :O))

Gazing at our child's smooth, sweet complexion, it can be hard to remember that our baby's skin isn't just beautiful , but is also an organ working hard to keep her healthy.    A baby's skin, like ours, is the first line of defense against infections and injuries; it also regulates body temperature.    However, baby's skin is much more fragile than an adults.  So, new moms, you'll want to be especially mindful in caring for your babies skin.

Some basic tips to remember when considering baby skin care:

* Keep bath time to 10-15 minutes to avoid drying out baby's skin

* Keep baby's skin moisturized, but dry

* Don't let salt or chlorine dry on baby's skin (bath your child as soon as possible after swimming or outdoor activity)

* Use a humidifier in baby's room if the air in your home is dry

* In warmer months, protect baby's skin from the sun (try an mild sunscreen)

* In cooler months, protect baby's skin from the elements (mittens, hats, scarves)

* Use products that assist you rather than hinder you in your efforts; ideally everything that touches your baby's skin should be organic and free from chemicals.

* Use a light laundry detergent to clean baby's clothes, blankets etc.  There are many detergents on the market made specifically for washing baby items. (Tiny Bubbles is our recommendation)

* Wipe baby's cheeks and chin area after feeding/ nursing with a damp cloth (it is a common for babies - especially chunky babes - to get a rash in their chin area due to trapped saliva or milk)

* Within reason, listen to your baby's preferences.  If there is a particular piece of clothing that consistently makes her cry or blanket that he hates to be wrapped in, perhaps it isn't comfortable.

*  Share with friends and family your efforts to choose pure, healthy products for your baby.   This will encourage Grandma, babysitters or whomever else may be caring for your baby to make the same choices.
