Organic Crib Mattress
Organic Crib Mattress
Preparing the nursery for your new baby is an exciting, fun and yet anxious time for many parents-to-be. Mom and Dad are often scrutinizing baby product reviews and suggestions and working hard to make sure everything is perfect and comfortable for their baby’s first day and night at home.
One of the most important considerations for parents is the crib and the crib mattress that their new baby is going to use. The perfect crib mattress is imperative if mommy and daddy hope to have a baby that begins sleeping through the night before too long. Comfort, support, and sturdiness are all important considerations, however, the most important factor to consider is from what and how the crib mattress is made.
The best choice for a crib mattress, in terms of purity and safety, is an organic crib mattress because they contain no pesticides, no defoliants, no mineral oils, no formaldehyde and no fire-retardants. Traditional, non organic crib mattresses are made of PVC, polyester, foam. They are then doused with flame-retardant chemicals and PBDE’s. Even though these chemicals are banned in some states, parents who don’t know better are buying these crib mattresses.
Young babies spend most of their time sleeping and it is during this time when their tiny bodies are working at peak capacity to adjust to their new surroundings. It is therefore of the utmost importance to create a toxic free sleeping area for your new baby, including an organic crib mattress. The harmful materials found in traditional, non organic mattresses are now being linked to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
An organic crib mattress is made with organic cotton that is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides. Additionally, no heavy metals or genetically modified substances are used. Most organic mattresses use polyethylene (a non-toxic and eco-friendly product) to create the waterproof layer.
You can also find organic mattresses (and organic bedding) to fit your bassinet and/or cradle if you choose to keep your new baby closer to mom & dad during those first few nights (or weeks!!). If you do not want to invest in an organic mattress for both the crib and bassinet/cradle, you can always opt for an organic mattress topper to use in the interim (pictured right). An organic travel baby mattress can also be used as a topper (see the On the Go Fleece Pad pictured left for example). These products provide a natural healthy surface for your baby when home or away.
Our top pick for safe bedding material wool. Wool is naturally dust mite, mold, fire and stain resistant and is generally in the middle range pricewise. Natural rubber is another good material as it naturally does not burn easily. To note: Organic mattresses get their fire safety naturally, and therefore don’t require substances like Boric Adic and PBDE’s to pass safety standards.
An organic crib mattress does not have to break your bank. Here are couple organic crib mattresses that we think are the BEST IN CLASS at a reasonable price!
